Big Bang Opening: Dear Anus - Vienna

The VBKÖ has selected this unlauded orifice to be the radiant center of their latest show. Praising the anus' erogenous powers, the curators claim humanity's shared possession of the rear aperture signals its power to challenge existing gender-bound conventions and identity blueprints.

Contributing artists include: Mareike Bernien & Moira Hille & Kerstin Schroedinger, Dorian Bonelli, Katrina Daschner, Paul DeFlorian, Drawing Workshop, Anna Ex, Alexander Ferrando, Armin Lorenz Gerold, Marlene Haring, Marty Huber, Eva Jantschitsch, Flo Maak, Mara Mattuschka & Gabriele Szekatsch, Katharina Morawek, Stephanie Seibold, Christian Töpfner, Marianne Vlaschits, Nazim Unal Yilmaz and Anette Sonnenwend.

Big Bang Opening: December 16th, 19:00. Opening hours: December 17th to Monday 22nd, daily: 15:00-19:00.

The Revolution Continues

The Saatchi Gallery is now open in the 70,000 sq. ft. Duke of York HQ building on King's Road, Chelsea with an exhibition dedicated to new art from China.

The inaugural exhibition entitled The Revolution Continues: New Chinese Art brings together the work of 24 of China's leading artists in a cutting edge survey of recent painting, sculpture and installation.

Yellow Fog - Art - Vienna

Danish artist Olafur Eliasson has graced the city of Vienna with a public installation, Yellow Fog. First shown in New York in 1998, Yellow Fog was brought to Vienna via the Verbund Collection, a corporate contemporary art collection in the heart of Vienna.

The piece is permanently installed along the Verbund building's 48 meter facade, where it can be viewed at dusk and into the night. The piece, which consists of 32 fluorescent tubes embedded in the pavement, creates a yellow light and fog that rises upwards, covering the building in a veil for one hour. The fog itself serves as a projection surface for the light to cast its effect.

Creating a dialogue between passers-by and spacial surroundings, the piece invites viewers to consider daily rhythms and architectural impacts.

Paraflows 08 - Utopia at MAK - Art - Vienna

The term utopia, 'the non-place', derived from old Greek 'u-', non, and 'tópos', place, denotes a 'nowhere' which is untraceable and therefore projecting all longing into an unreachable beyond. Utopia is therefore an imagination which is thinkable as an idea, yet is not directly realisable. It is the great dream, concept, and vision of a world or a time with a new social, religious or technical order.

UTOPIA can be traced back to the book 'De Optimo Reipublicae Statu deque nova insula Utopia Libellus vere aureaus, nec minus salutaris quam festivus (Of the best state law and of the new island Utopia, truly a golden booklet, as pleasant as it is cheerful)' by Thomas Morus which was first published in 1516. The text alludes to positive scenarios of technical, spatial and social constructs which have not been realised. Usually, technology plays a major role in utopian phantasms. More often than not their realistic implementation is a matter of availability of technology and very often it is - especially in digital art - the starting point of a work of art.

In 2008, Paraflows 08 UTOPIA will try to develop the perspective, the linguistic roots of which corresponds with last year's exhibitions. In the context of the topic UTOPIA, we want to gather concepts of a possible future, draw perspectives, dreams and prognoses, dare take a prognostic look at the future. Directly tying in with last year's festival topic UN_SPACE - which dealt with non-space and impossible spaces - this year we will again strive to provide a multi-layered examination involving the overwhelming architectonic and historical reality of the venue - the MAK Gegenwartskunstdepot Gefechtsturm Arenbergpark.

As Michael J. pointed out in the comments of the previous Sharpie Lamborghini post, Robert Rauschenberg was way ahead of the game on the whole "drawing all over badass cars" thing with his photo transfer 635 Csi way back in 1986 (first car pictured above). As it turns out, he wasn't alone either. Among others, but perhaps most notably, Andy Warhol took a shot at the concept (see videos below) as part of the BMW Art Car program. More Info and pictures on all the Art Cars can be found at the US Auto Parts Art Car Site. You can also find some nice big wallpapers of the Rauschenberg car over here.

And no, this site isn't switching format to an automotive blog; regardless of the recent dearth of vehicle related posts. Thanks again for the heads-up on the Rauschenberg car Michael.

A few weeks ago, I had a reader ASCII art contest on Wired.com. It was a follow up to the story about 2channel and Nico Nico Douga in the June issue of the mag. Two Japanese web experts judged the contest, and the results were published in a gallery yesterday.

Currently, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich presents "Your mobile expectations: BMW H2R project" by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson (born 1967). Olafur Eliasson was commissioned by the car company BMW to design the 16th BMW Art Car. What sets Eliasson's "car" apart from previous Art Cars is that it is not recognizable as a car anymore. Olafur Eliasson has removed the outer covering of the BMW H2R racing car and replaced it with a complex skin of metal spanning the body of the car. This shape is covered with ice.
In this video, Thomas Girst, Spokesperson Cultural Communications of BMW Group tells us about the history of the BMW Art Cars and the collaboration with Olafur Eliasson and the curators of the show, Dr. Corinna Rösner (Chief Curator of Die Neue Sammlung - State Museum of Applied Arts and Design) and Dr. Bernhard Schwenk (Chief Curator Contemporary Art, Pinakothek der Moderne) talk about Olafur Eliasson's project, the collaboration between their houses and the relationship between art and design.
Olafur Eliasson - Your mobile expectations: BMW H2R project, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. Preview, May 27, 2008. The exhibition runs until 20th July 2008.
PS: A comprehensive survey of Olafur Eliasson's work is currently on view at MoMA and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York (Olafur Eliasson: Take your time, runs until 30th June, 2008).
