Ben Ross - Ars Authentica - Vienna

Young German artist Ben Ross presents a collection of drawings for the first time in Vienna. Focusing on the notion of authenticity, Ross' playful illustrations belie a more serious theme, at times searching for parallels or distinctions between today's culture and culture from 60 years ago (particularly in the lead up to and during the Second World War).

In an age where any piece of information can be made public without verification, the lines between political ideologies are increasingly blurred and the quest for identity has become convoluted with distractions, Ross questions how it is we can define something or someone as authentic and, of course, how we arrive at a definition of authenticity itself.

Each of the 20 participating Viennese galleries has selected one artist, who will curate a show on "art&film" in the gallery spaces. Thus, 20 exhibitions running in parallel will allow visitors to compare how 20 artists explore the theme of art&film as curators and which other artists and artworks they select for their respective shows.

POMPE FUNEBRE

MAGAZINE - Culture - Vienna

In parallel with the space's exhibition programme, an archive of artists and their works will be set up. After completion, it will be made available through various channels and publications (Review-Magazine, Annual Catalogue & Web).

With its selected programme and regular events, MAGAZIN succeeds in providing the space and transparency needed to make the works of young, up-and-coming artists, interdisciplinary projects and contents visible to the outside world.

By also making use of parasitical strategies, like pop up events in only temporarily open spaces, the project is meant to further establish its novel conceptions of design and space on an international scale.

In this year's programme, there will be three individual exhibitions, three group presentations, as well as workshops, open forums and an arts placement programme. Twice a year, exhibitions will be realised in partnering cities.

This scheme will see young Austrian art being made available abroad, strengthen the ties between domestic and international art scenes and enable the platform to be represented across Austria's boarders.

Wurstsalon : Mathew Jonson - Vienna

Jonson's sounds focus on a multitude of outboard equipment, old analogues that give him the distinct hands on usage that have become notorious of his live performances. Mathew's music is a hybrid of styles; forging influences from techno, jazz, house, drum 'n' bass and fusion to create flowing bass lines and synth melodies that have influenced his trademark tech-fusion sound.

What has often set Mathew apart from other performers is his ability to improvise and perform with other players in a live group setting. This has resulted in musical formations such as the Modern Deep Left Quartet and Cobblestone Jazz, who have developed an international reputation for their intensely soulful and masterful composition that translates both in recording sessions and in live performance. Mathew has also collaborated with artists such as Luciano, Hrdvsion and the Mole, continually looking at new approaches to electronic music.

Les deux étoiles burlesque - Vienna

Lili Marleen, the german bombshell entertaining the Viennese Burlesque afficionados with Marie la Catastrophe and their Les deux étoiles burlesque show.

Chicago... had a fierce pioneer gaiety that enlivened the senses, yet underlying it throbbed masculine loneliness. Counteracting this somatic ailment was a national distraction known as the burlesque show, consisting of a coterie of rough-and-tumble comedians supported by twenty or more chorus girls. Some were pretty, others shopworn. Some of the comedians were funny, most of the shows were smutty harem comedie coarse and cynical affairs. --Charles Chaplin, My Autobiography: 125-6

Today New Burlesque has taken many forms, but all have the common trait of honoring one or more of burlesque's previous incarnations, with acts including striptease, expensive costumes, bawdy humor, cabaret and more.

Lili Marleen and Marie La Catastrophe are the best proof of this active contemporary scene.

Icke Micke w/ Sick Girls - Vienna

When the Sick Girls played together for the first time at the bar floor of Tresor Club Berlin in August 2004 it was just for the fun of it. None of the girls would have thought that they would present themselves as the successful DJ team they are now, from this time on. With years and years of club- and Techno- knowledge under their belts, they were rather well known for pulling the strings of Berlin club biz, than for setting the dance floors on fire themselves. But the time was right for a new style of club music and this is what they stand for!

The Sick Girls skilfully combine the most banging, bouncing and bassy tunes of all means electronic: Bashment, UK Bass, Hip Hop, Dirty South, Reggaeton, Baile Funk, B-more, Electro, Garage and - still hard to find outside the UK - Grime.

Best of ... - Vienna

Michaels career, not only as an artist, is a rather unusual one: born in 1969 in Vienna, he got interested in technology, especially electronics and mathematics, already when 7 years old. At the age of 12 he worked as a programmer. He quit school at 17 and started his first own business in the financial field, publishing analysis on the financial markets and managing funds, until he sold his business at the age of 23. The following 3 years he spent climbing and hiking in Africa, USA, Asia, and all over Europe.

From 1995 on he was the publisher of werk-zeug, a technology and art magazine, as well as streetfashion, a magazine featuring fashionable people on the streets all over the world. He was also active in the field of software development, is the originator of many inventions, and holds international patents ranging from climbing equipment and bicycle gears to trading systems and electronic payment systems.

there is no way to (mate)realize all the plans and projects I have on my mind in one lifetime - I can only pick the best and feasible". His work touches a broad variety of fields such as technology, politics, science, social topics, and style

Already in 2001, Michael decided to sell his companies to start his career in arts and works as he calls it. In the very same year though, he started a side business on eBay that eventually became the world's largest powerselling enterprise on eBay, a company with 80 employees and a turnover of 30 million euros a year. In early 2005, the company went bankrupt, and Michael lost all his money in the process. Never shying away from new challenges, he decided to write a book about the company and its end: English and German versions of "The end of EBay"... Qentis' bankruptcy also had its good sides: finally, Michael could concentrate on his art and private studies.

Michael's works are the result of a rich live and a long history of ideas.

Unser Call for entries - Culture - Vienna

The first issue of Vienna based Unser Magazin is about to emerge ... And for this, the Unser crew needs your ideas, photos, illustrations and texts!

Our subject is Home Is Where The Heart Is. You certainly know the feeling, of being at exactly the right place at exactly the right - even if it is just for a moment. This "place" can be a person, the old hoodie from your teenage-wardrobe or the moment when you sit in the back of a car with your loved one right next to you and you just know: This is it, you don't want to be anywhere else in the world. But it can also be the bittersweet melancholy or sadness that grows around things and places that used to be home - but are not anymore.

Unser Magazin will be issued twice a year in a registered circulation of 200 copies, 80 pages, A5, printed in black and white.

We will use different styles of paper, there will be a little photo album inside, pretty cut-out name plates for your front door, a comic-version of Elvis' old tune "Home is where the heart is" and a photo series of ex-boyfriends and the rooms they used to live in.

As you can see, our subject is quite open. Apart from top visual creatives and authors we now invite YOU to contribute to the magazine. Please send your proposals, ideas, concepts and submissions until October 28th to info@unsermagazin.net. As far as text is concerned we are not so much interested in "real" journalistic pieces, but care more for literary texts such as short stories and poems, attempts of gonzo, borderline-journalism and other dramatically different forms.

We don't care if your submission has already been published as long as it fits in. Visuals naturally have to work in black and white. The most interesting submissions will be published.

If you have any questions and/or suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact us. Please forward this to other possibly interested persons and institutions. We are looking forward to your contributions!

Best regards, the editors. Hedi Lusser & Kirsten Reinhardt

Watch out! There will be a release party in Munich, Vienna and Berlin. Check the event section to find out more.

Geschwindigkeit - Vienna

Mario Neugebauer's double fascination with the arts and cars has led him down an interesting career path. Originally trained as an automobile manufacturer, Neugebauer eventually forayed into the arts, namely sound (he was responsible for breathing life back into the work of post-retired crooner Louie Austen) and visual art (with a stint as a bodybuilder somewhere in between).

His penchant for cars regularly influences his visual pieces. Abstract, languid brushstrokes of color vaguely trace outlines of various models while a mish-mash of collated objects (including car parts) highlight a division between art and functionality.

With a focus on speed and luxury goods (as the exhibition's title suggests), Neugebauer creates worlds where the gleam of muscle cars and tire rims rival luxury handbags or watches in the status stakes.

Installations, objects and large-format paintings will be shown in a 850qm Solo Exhibition.

blk/river - Vienna

That the Danube International is also called Black River, has less to do with the river's water quality than with the fact, that the Danube comes out of the Black Forest and empties into the "Black" Sea. And, because the color black is not just a physical experience, but is also historically connected with qualities such as radical-ness and otherness, the Apocalyptic Colors team decided on the nomenclature of "Black River" for its Street Art festival. So it makes perfectly sense, that the majority of the outdoor-projects take place at the Danube-canal.

The three pillars of the festival are its many outer projects; a film series; and a group exhibition. The project focuses exclusively on artists from three continents, whose work stands in the forefront in terms of expanding the concept of street art - away from the pure, illegal art on the wall, to new media, architecture, the museum establishment, and also including the issue of selling street art.

An aspect also included in the Festival is the phenomenon of many of its representative artists attracted to the prospect of returning to the place where they began - the streets and walls of big cities.

Starting on 15th of October, vienna.unlike brings you an exclusive daily coverage from the blk/river project days.
Your daily dose of updates on the projects along the Danube Canal, photos and insight into the artists' and festival organizers minds.

Coem back daily and check out what happens, when sixteen international artists collide with the streets of the Austrian capital.
