MAGAZINE - Culture - Vienna

In parallel with the space's exhibition programme, an archive of artists and their works will be set up. After completion, it will be made available through various channels and publications (Review-Magazine, Annual Catalogue & Web).

With its selected programme and regular events, MAGAZIN succeeds in providing the space and transparency needed to make the works of young, up-and-coming artists, interdisciplinary projects and contents visible to the outside world.

By also making use of parasitical strategies, like pop up events in only temporarily open spaces, the project is meant to further establish its novel conceptions of design and space on an international scale.

In this year's programme, there will be three individual exhibitions, three group presentations, as well as workshops, open forums and an arts placement programme. Twice a year, exhibitions will be realised in partnering cities.

This scheme will see young Austrian art being made available abroad, strengthen the ties between domestic and international art scenes and enable the platform to be represented across Austria's boarders.

Banksy in the movies - Culture - Berlin

"A film about a man who tried to make a film about me" is how Banksy describes his first feature.

The British graffiti artist is renowned for producing iconic street art and fiercely guarding his identity to avoid prosecution. Little surprise then, that he was unwilling to be filmed by an eccentric French shop owner named Thierry Guetta.

EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP traces Thierry's attempts to capture the world of graffiti art in thrilling detail, following many of the best known vandals at work in the streets. We trace Thierry's efforts to locate and befriend Banksy only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner - with spectacular results. An incendiary true story of low-level criminality, companionship and incompetence. The story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed.

The London newspaper 'The Times' once called Banksy "the true people's painter". His black-and-white images of kissing policemen and rioters throwing flowers are now popular icons. Banksy's work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the Palestinian West Bank. His graffiti combines wry humour with political comment - both of which can certainly to be expected from his cinematic debut, which he has dubbed "the world's first street art disaster movie".

Banksy began his career as a graffiti artist in Bristol where he was a member of Bristol's DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ) from 1992-94. He works free-hand and with stencils, latterly opting for the exclusive use of stencils. His committed works can be seen on streets all over the world as well as in museums (MoMA, Tate Modern). He has also created album covers (for 'Blur' among others) and has published his work in books, such as the recent publication "Wall and Piece".

As per usual my Monday started with a computer malfunction so this post is gonna be light. As mentioned on the NYSAT microsite Why Donate page, we are starting a very small granting program called Under One Hundred. We will be putting out an official call for submissions, which we will take on an ongoing basis, in the next few weeks. The above project done by Geoff Hargadon in Boston is a wonderful example of something we would consider for Under One Hundred. As of yet Geoff has only installed this ad takeover in Boston and here at PublicAdCampaign we would love to see it come to New York. Look for the first Under One Hundred from I AM and PosterChild in late February.

Incubus Project "Corrosion" - Berlin

Very few are able to create such a strong association between the mood of the street and their art like Incubus Project. The streetart-duo from St. Petersburg is famous beyond Russia for their complex non-linear collage compositions that merge with their environment. This is not just stencils on the walls, but also the walls themselves, their face, communication, pipes, wires, trans- former stations - they are all part of the arrangement. The themes are mainly futuristic and by displaying ma- chinery they bring early videos by „Kraftwerk", a german technopop band, to memory. Moreover the purist choice of colors -red/black - constitutes another part of their expressive and longevity stencils.

In 2008 Incubus Pro- ject were already an important part of the graffiti & streetart "Names Festival" in Prague, where they presented their work next to other internati- onal leaders of the scene like Blu, M-City and Brad Downey. Considering the for- mation of the group was only in 2006, their participation was quite impressive.

Since their break-up last year all works are signed by street-artist INKY and they contain more speci- fic references to his per- sonal career. INKY gra- duated from the St Peter- burg College of Art with specialty in painting, and is now completing trai- ning at Saint Petersburg's Academy of Art and De- sign as an architect. Both of these disciplines influ- ence and drive the creati- vity of the artist, formed his style, and defined the themes of his work. Inky is interested in formal architectural forms and structures equally with leading graphics and pic- turesque.

ATM Gallery is proud to present INKY's first solo show in Berlin, where he will display a number of new works that were exclusi- vely produced for this particular exhibition and have not been shown in public yet. One can look forward to an artistic ex- pression that moves between socialistic propaganda and futu- ristic modernism as well as connecting East and West.

Cum* | Give Up The Goods - Berlin

Creating works that are often as sexually explicit and provocative as their collective name, the three artists behind Cum* (Lieven Deconinck, Robin De Vooght and Gäetan Begerem) met on the streets of Ghent in 2002.

Beginning with a stencil of a pin-up girl and poking fun at contemporary representation of females in pornography, Cum* has since branched out, shooting their tongue-in-cheek viewpoints towards various aspects of popular culture and their representations in the media, turning "trashy" low culture elements, like tabloid magazine covers, into the basis for high culture iconography.

Pool Gallery presents a collection of new and existing works from this trio of Belgian street bandits.

blk/river - Vienna

That the Danube International is also called Black River, has less to do with the river's water quality than with the fact, that the Danube comes out of the Black Forest and empties into the "Black" Sea. And, because the color black is not just a physical experience, but is also historically connected with qualities such as radical-ness and otherness, the Apocalyptic Colors team decided on the nomenclature of "Black River" for its Street Art festival. So it makes perfectly sense, that the majority of the outdoor-projects take place at the Danube-canal.

The three pillars of the festival are its many outer projects; a film series; and a group exhibition. The project focuses exclusively on artists from three continents, whose work stands in the forefront in terms of expanding the concept of street art - away from the pure, illegal art on the wall, to new media, architecture, the museum establishment, and also including the issue of selling street art.

An aspect also included in the Festival is the phenomenon of many of its representative artists attracted to the prospect of returning to the place where they began - the streets and walls of big cities.

Starting on 15th of October, vienna.unlike brings you an exclusive daily coverage from the blk/river project days.
Your daily dose of updates on the projects along the Danube Canal, photos and insight into the artists' and festival organizers minds.

Coem back daily and check out what happens, when sixteen international artists collide with the streets of the Austrian capital.
