robertfrank detroit Detroit Experiences: Robert Frank Photographs, 1955

A pointed complement to Robert Frank's The Americans, which closed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in early January, the recently opened Detroit Experiences: Robert Frank Photographs, 1955, situates the photographers eye and work in a single locale.

Frank traveled the nation in 1955 compiling what would eventually become The Americans. He spent considerable time in Detroit, documenting factories, lunch-counters, and sports stadiums. It was a city of much inspiration.

The Detroit Institute of Art celebrates the Motor City's place in Robert Frank's view of America through this special exhibition. Over 60 images are included, many that have never been seen before. Certainly worth trying to catch if The Americans was to your fancy.

Abandoned Images - Berlin

While most talk about the future of film centers on technology, copyright and piracy, Berlin-based author Stephen Barber looks back at the tradition of the cinematic experience for the moviegoer as a means of previewing future film habits.

For his latest book Abandoned Images (2010), Barber photographed a series of rundown (and many disused) film theaters in Los Angeles, each originally built in the early 20th century. Once majestic palaces where throngs of people would gather to witness the latest spectacle, they now stand as decrepit throwbacks to the (dare we say it) "golden days of cinema", with Barber arguing that perhaps the decay of these buildings is the tangible semiotic of the changes that film has undergone in the digital society, presenting an argument that film must find ways of adapting to survive and safeguard its inherent sense of wonder.

Tonight, Barber will present passages from his book alongside film festival curator Verena von Stackelberg. Reservations are necessary. Send an RSVP to info@dialogueberlin.com.

Thomas Olivier Myers - Fading to White - Berlin

Driven by the desire to show the passage of time through images that appear alive and moving, Myers' work recalls the process of the human eye, where images are destructed and transformed. Rather than capturing a single frozen moment, Myers scopes out his subject in minute detail, collecting numerous pictures which is later combined into the large-scale panoramas.

Employing the combination of digital photography and computer technology, Myers pursues and pushes the limits of traditional collage with the implementation of modern techniques. If there is initial irritation when viewing the works, it very soon gives way to the urgent desire to dive deeper into the matter.

Nikola Mihov: Forget Your Past - Berlin

The graffiti ''Forget Your Past'' above the entrance of the monument to the Bulgarian Communist Party demonstrates the fate of the communist era monuments in Bulgaria. Situated in towns across the country, and once a symbol of pride, today most of them are neglected and ransacked. No matter if devoted to the Soviet Army, or the struggle against the Ottoman rule, they all share one and the same fate - to be a silent symbol of the forgotten past.

Many of the communist era monuments have been dismantled after the political changes in 1989. Nevertheless, there are still approximately 150 of them remain standing. Many of them are not recognized by the state and remain ownerless. Their exact number is unknown and it is difficult to find information about their authors and history.

The photographic series ''Forget Your Past'' reveals 14 of the most impressive communist era monuments in Bulgaria. The exhibition features 38 photographs displayed in diptychs, together with detailed information about the people who designed the structures and their histories. This project is realised within the frame of "Trace" - a platform that brings together artists and architects to consider the integration of communist monuments into the present day urban environment.

Nikola Mihov was born in 1982 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He works in the field of the photography and video art. Nikola has held solo exhibitions in Sofia, Paris, Zagreb and London and participated in numerous international group exhibitions and film festivals. He received the "Photo School Award" of the 6th international photography biennial "Phodar" in 2009, and the Award for Photojournalism from the Bulgarian Photographic Academy annual contest in 2007. His work has been published in the prestigious French photography magazines PHOTO and Reponses Photo.
