The Body as Sculpture: Sanja Ivekovic - Paris

The current exhibition at Musée Rodin is devoted to video artists who sought to emphasize the relation to the body in their artistic practice, particulary through performance. The third artist featured in the series is Sanja Ivekovic.

In the 1970s and 1980s, she developed an artistic practice which was far removed from "official art" and the predominant tendencies in the former Yugoslavian communist regime. Using photographic collage, performance or video, she questions the way feminine identity builds up itself compared to the social and political spheres, and reciprocal influences between public imaginery and intimate notions.

Promises from the past - Paris

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Centre Pompidou presents this exhibition highlighting the work of fifty artists whose backgrounds traverse multiple nationalities and generations. Challenging the idea of art history being something linear and continuous, the exhibition examines Europe's former East/West divide, the influence this had on a generation of artists and the impact of those artists on a new breed of creative minds.

Featuring a mixed palette of works, spanning photography, film, performance art and even documents detailing artistic exchanges between Paris and the East, Centre Pompidou presents more than 160 pieces, among them work from some of the region's most reputed artists such as the outspoken, Croatian-born activist and artist Sanja Ivekovic and pioneer of Polish conceptual art Edward Krasiński.

Etienne de Crécy - Paris

Etienne de Crécy is, of course, best known for his super-size rubik's-cube-on-acid light shows. His work is firmly shaped in the classic French mould of smooth techno based around some seriously greasy bass-lines and elevating 4/4 beats. It comes as no surprise that he even went to the very same college as Air and Alex Gopher, with whom he later went on to create the 'Solid' label.

His album 'Super Discount' (1996) is even touted as many as being the first of the so-called 'French Touch' scene that went on to sprout artists including Daft Punk and Cassius.

Tonight he plays out a DJ set at the recently re-opened La Machine.

The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra - Paris

You can do so many things with vegetables these days. The versatile little eddibles can be boiled, fried, baked or blended into all kinds of wierd and wonderful concoctions. The bright sparks, however, that make up Vienna's Vegetable Orchestra have entirely different intentions for them.

Apparently sophisticated sound technology transforms them into audible sound generation bodies that are performed as part of a contemporary composition. Prepare for fanfares of pepper-trumpets and cascading arpeggios from the radish- xylophone.

They play tonight at the Centre Pompidou as part of the 5th edition of Hors Pistes.

Sport Hit Paradise - Paris

Though often pegged as a "designer", New York-based artist Elisabeth Arkhipoff shakes off the at-times restricting boundaries of design, approaching her commercial work as an inquisitive artist and creating pieces for labels such as Swarovski and Anna Sui and musicians like Dirty.

Her installation "No Soda No Fun" (which featured typical teenage sayings and slogans sprayed onto white objects) was turned into the basis for a DJ Mehdi music video, in which she and street art legend Futura 2000 recreated the piece.

For 12Mail's second exhibition, the curators present the next installment of artist Arkhipoff's fictional band Sport Hit Paradise, which she created in Tokyo in 2004. Complete with songs, a website and fanclub, the "band's" latest output "You in Me" documents the creative process via drawings and collages and is, naturellement, accompanied by a limited edition album release (featuring collaborations with Munk, Villeneuve, Pilooski and more).

Agustí Centelles - Paris

The horrors of the Spanish Civil War have been documented and interpreted in various media--from Dalí's Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) as a forewarning to the war to Picasso's Guernica, an ever-controversial and definitive piece of both art and history.

This exhibition showcases the work of renowned Catalan photojournalist, Agustí Centelles, who documented the Civil War during his time as part of the Republican resistance effort. Fleeing Spain after the Republican defeat, he also captured the nine months he spent at the Bram refugee camp.

The negatives of his work remained hidden in France until Centelles himself retrieved them after Franco's death in 1975. For the first time, Centelles images will be on display in Paris, featuring over 100 prints.

Note: this exhibition is at the Jeu de Paume at À l'Hôtel de Sully.

Marianne Faithfull & Bruckner Orchester Linz - Paris

In a stark contrast to the over-produced, over-styled female singers that know how to lip-sync better than sing, Marianne Faithful delivers brutally honest performances--proving that sometimes little more than raw emotion can transfix an audience.

As a small prelude to her upcoming tour, Faithfull revives her flair for interpreting Kurt Weill's and Berthold Brecht's pieces for this performance, this time accompanied by the Bruckner Orchester Linz.
