The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra - Paris

You can do so many things with vegetables these days. The versatile little eddibles can be boiled, fried, baked or blended into all kinds of wierd and wonderful concoctions. The bright sparks, however, that make up Vienna's Vegetable Orchestra have entirely different intentions for them.

Apparently sophisticated sound technology transforms them into audible sound generation bodies that are performed as part of a contemporary composition. Prepare for fanfares of pepper-trumpets and cascading arpeggios from the radish- xylophone.

They play tonight at the Centre Pompidou as part of the 5th edition of Hors Pistes.

A MAZE. - Culture - Berlin

By combining courage for experimentation and joy in gaming, A MAZE. celebrates the convergence of computer games and art. A MAZE. is more than a festival - it is a series of events as well as a conceptual format that offers a regularly emerging platform for interdisciplinary exchange. Amalgamation with other media is particularly desirable. Creatives are encouraged to break down the computer game and surpass established concepts of play.

Not only are artists, designers, scientists and computer whizzes offered a platform to communicate, express ideas, learn from each other and experiment together, but the specific focus on promoting the joy in experimenting reveals the creative potential that lies behind the ambivalent medium of the computer games. The person using the games forms the central focus of these events. Intersections especially with related media such as film, TV, literature or music offer further sources for inspiration.

Playful interaction encourages interpersonal exchange. A MAZE. develops this urgently needed action space by combining a diversity of individually designed modules, which are continuously tested and expanded through regular events.

The A MAZE. Exhibition presents multiple facets of the complex field of so-called Game Art. The subject matter includes both: art inspired by computer games, and art aiming to create new forms of gaming. A rather dense variant is offered through the A MAZE. Playground - a small installation including a diverse selection of delicious games.

The A MAZE. Award follows this direction by honoring outstanding computer game creations. The artistic content and cultural relevance of computer games are discussed within the context of the A MAZE. Games Culture Circle, whereas the A MAZE. Jump'n Run series offers a different approach: it celebrates interpersonal exchange through playful experiments with the musical attributes of computer technology.

The exhibition, curated by Domenico Quaranta for Laboral's new Mediateca Expandida, explores the role played by music in the adoption and manipulation of obsolete technologies: vinyls, old computers, game platforms, etc. I'm going to be the usual procrastinator and promise that i'll come back with a report later on this week. In the meantime, here's a link to the catalog of the exhibition and to videos by the extremely talented Raquel Meyers continue

Tweakers and Hackers - Berlin

There is, in Ben Butler's music, a bristling and expansive melodic madness inherited from the baroque experiments of 1970s studio megalomaniacs such as Vangelis, Alan Parsons, Triumvirat or even ELO, devoured, digested, sent back in time and thrown up over some bizarrely funky rhythmic backdrops that one would perhaps define as nerdxploitation, hadn't this term been spiritually trademarked by the evil ghouls of the MTV. This philosophical stance should perhaps make you think of Ben Butler & Mouse Pad as the shy hyper-intelligent cousin of a couple of popular French dance acts also raised on unhealthy doses of weirdo synth music, experimental disco and coffee black like sin, or the one true genius who will compose the jingle for Firefly, if this series ever comes back to the screens under Paper Rad's direction. Either way, he's onto a winner, and you will be too, once you step past the golden rings of the dimensional trans-sonic portal of his awesome music. via Juan - 20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk

Touch Yello - The Virtual Concert - Vienna

Touch Yello evokes moods, pictures and movie scenes. For the creation of this virtual concert they're working with Kevin Blanc, a Swiss moving image designer and art director.

This is the logical next chapter in Yello's 30-year history, which has seen the electronic innovators pushing the limits of music video production since 1981, when they released "Pinball Cha Cha", a suave figure-oriented video that was later included in the Museum of Modern Art's Music Video Exhibition.

However, the most mainstream aspect of Yello's music and film career sprung from the success of the 1985 single "Oh Yeah", an addictive number which was prominently featured in John Hughes' classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, among other films. After that, the group continuing composing for the silver screen: they scored the comedy Nuns on the Run and band member Dieter Meier directed the 1990 feature Snowball.

Omodaka, the awesome 8-bit electropop band, has come out with a new music video for the first time in three years. The song is called Plum Song, and it features some familiar tunes and video game noises. The video takes you on a journey through an erotic-psychedelic electrified re-imagination of the Yoshiwara red light district from the Edo period.

100 Years of The Gap - Vienna

Celebrate 100 years of Austria's most important pop-culture magazine The Gap.. On hand to lead the rapturous applause (and possibly steal some thunder) will be none other than Superproducer and all-round musical maestro Gonzales.

The expat Canadian more widely known for his production on Feist's last album and his collaborations with Peaches (check this out), Gonzales is a performer in his own right, a multi-talented musical virtuoso who released the Soft Power disc in 2008, a tribute to soaring soft-rock records of the '70s and '80s-the genre that usually lurks under the "guilty pleasure" banner. Think sublime, chest-beating power-balladry, shamelessly dripping with piano and sax solos, bells and handclaps and ultimately surging towards some climactic key changes.

Viennese Soundclouds - Culture - Vienna

If you haven't yet heard, the next generation of professional music exchange has taken over. Straight from Berlin via Stockholm, Soundcloud's online platform allows for collaboration and communication in the production stages. A truly nifty tool, music producers world-wide are rejoicing and all those lazy Viennese producers can sit back and relax (in case they weren't already) and let the program do the work.

Midsommer: Jake the Rapper - Berlin

This Brooklyn-born DJ got his start at age 14, when he played his first show in the industrial Washington city of Spokane.

After leaving the states during the first gulf war, he came to Germany and attended the school of art in Hamburg. Though he was originally a part of the punk scene, Jake began rapping in '92 and has been MCing, beatboxing and DJing his way through the past two decades.

Check out his set for a serious mix of hip-hop, elctro and techno (and sweaty dancing).

Dig it!

Lambchop - Vienna

Lambchop's mix of musical genres still likely creates headaches for retailers when the shelves are being stocked. Even though the band's lineup changes frequently (singer and lyricist Kurt Wagner being the obvious exception), the band has nevertheless developed a signature sound: a challenging and unique blend of country, alternative rock, folk, lounge, jazz, soul, and Antarctic steel drumming (well, maybe not this one yet).

Coupled with Wagner's untraditional voice - sometimes whispered or spoken or sung in such a way that it sounds like the words are being choked out from his throat and might not quite make it -it's tough to think of many bands that incorporate so many disparate styles without sounding like a wretched mess of noise.
