Copenhagenzine notes this new bike-friendly urban design feature in the Danish capital: It's a hand rail and foot rest for cyclists to use while they wait for the light to change. The sign reads "Hey, cyclist! Rest your foot here... and thank you for cycling in the city." Scandinavia does it again.

designmind122109Despite what some say, getting involved on the internet can lead to meaningful change.

design mind on GOOD is a series exploring the power of design by the editors of design mind magazine. New posts every Tuesday and Thursday. "Without community, there is no liberation." --Audre Lorde A lot of activists cringe at the idea of moving their efforts online. They fear the insulting label of "slacktivist"; one who joins a cause online and fades away. I get it. I've asked the same skeptical questions: Are we walking through the doors of a factory each time we sign into another "network"? Are we fragmenting our collective identity and yielding to the desire for empathetic unification with strangers who have never heard how heavy we breathe after protesting against the oppressive 'isms that silence us? Is my avatar really creating a change? Well, I think it's time to raise a virtual fist. Online activism is not only meaningful; it's essential, and it extends far beyond simple digital philanthropy or a virtual commitment to join a cause with the click of a "thumbs up." The interconnected network of media outlets and online spaces actually resembles the systems and political battlegrounds that have always been the focus of movements of resistance. And if we are to change these online spaces, as those before us have tried to change physical world, then like them, we have to work within the system we are striving so desperately to change. If the traditional activist groups whose history is rooted in Angela Davis's radical movement of the 1960s or Emma Goldman's...
Emir Kusturica's Black Cat, White Cat - Copenhagen

This is the story of two gypsy families that grotesquely become intertwined when Matka borrows money from the small time crook Dadan. In return Dadan wants Matkos son to marry his daughter Afrodita, not taking into consideration that neither the boy or girl habor any interest in eachother whatsoever. Everything truly starts to go astray when the son falls in love with someone else completely, setting the scene for a typical Kusturica-film full of temperamental country-hicks, twirled moustaches, horn ensembles and Balkan folklore..

David Cronenbergs Videodrome - Copenhagen

Generally considered one of Cronenbergs crowning achievements, Videodrome is the story of television programmer Max Renn, whose world is instantly transformed when he is trapped inside the channel Videodrome.

Videodrome only transmits hardcore S/M films together with hallucination-inducing signals, and Max and his girlfriend Nicki, played by Debbie Harry, enters a world where the boundaries between real and unreal are slowly dissolved.

Created by an organization whose goals are to revolutionize the world in the bloodiest way possible, Videodrome is meant to herald the coming of a new world order, with Max as caught in centre of the conspiracy.

CPH:DOX: Jóhann Jóhannson + Ben Frost at Statens Museum for Kunst - Music - Copenhagen

In recent years, classical music has been dynamically challenged by new and visionary artists from the modern electronic music scene, which has consistently endowed it with new space, contents and relevance. At the forefront of this movement stands the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannson, who with his romantic and supernatural aural spheres unites a unique sense of beauty with a dark and daunting musical universe--close to Arvo Pärt, but still with his own unique style.

Jóhann Jóhannsson performs on piano and electronica, accompanied by Iceland's foremost string quartet as well as Mathias M.D. Hemstock on electronica and percussion. Jóhannsson has always had a strong cinematic dimension in his works, and the concert is supplemented by no less than a premiere of a visual show created live on location by the artist Magnús Helgason.

The second artists of the evening, Ben Frost, evokes memories of both Autechre, Murcof and Aphex Twin, but in reality it's possibly artists such as Swans and Arvo Pärt, or modern classical pioneers such as Michael Nyman or Max Richter, who are closer to Frost's universe. This is Ben Frosts' first performance ever in Denmark.

CPH:DOX: David Lynch's Documentary Project at Cinemateket - Screening - Copenhagen

David Lynch keeps surprising us. After last year's nightmare opus Inland Empire, the headstrong American director now turns his digital camera towards the real world. David Lynch's Documentary Project was established by Lynch as a caravan project, where his film crew during the course of two months has crossed the American continent and immortalized ordinary people in small five minute vignettes. But things never end up being completely ordinary from Lynch's perspective.

The project is devised as a longer series, but screens for on of the first times here as an exclusive taster of Lynch's documentary project (with an introduction by the film's producer). To conclude the evening, the sequel to last year's portrait film L Y N C H, namely L Y N C H 2 screens.

CPH:DOX: Gummo at Gloria Biograf - Screening - Copenhagen

Gummo is a succinct example of what you should do, if you don't have any money and want to make an unforgettable film. Solomon and Tummler are two teenage friends who kill time by sniffing glue and cycling around aimlessly in the remains of their tornado-ravaged town to shoot cats. Around them circulates a giddily bizarre gallery of characters, which deal a knock-out blow to every white trash cliché, and which unite in an uncompromising vision of the American Midwest as an anti-Bible sewer of ruin and cultural dissolution.

In his virtuous debut, Harmony Korine mixes fiction and documentary (and everything from 35mm to Polaroid and Super-8) to create a confrontative and surreal field trip into a world of violence and excess, but which also has its very own beauty and critical absurdity.

The film screens two additional times:

New Media Days - Copenhagen

Forget about tales of Hans Christian Andersen, Carlsberg beer and tall, fair-haired vikings. Denmark is on the cutting edge of media. It has the world's highest broadband penetration, ranks number one in terms of national IT use ahead of Singapore and the U.S. and makes movies and TV shows that pull in bigger audiences than Hollywood productions. In short Denmark is a place where people don't just talk about new media, they make and use them.

Each October more than 800 Scandinavian and international media professionals from all corners of the business converge in Copenhagen to shape the media of tomorrow. We call the event New Media Days and through debates and exciting talks, we aim to inspire media professionals to embrace the opportunities arising from technology development.

In between media innovation and knowledge sharing we encourage our guests to enjoy the city of Copenhagen. Go ahead and take networking to the streets, cafés, restaurants and night clubs and vent some of that creative spirit.

Btw: my favourite Berlin guide is Long hot summer - Urban Beach Emulation

Long hot summer - Urban Beach Emulation

Berlin is about to go summer crazy. No matter if you're a foreigner living in Berlin or just a temporary guest - it's inevitable that everyone back home will hound you for suggestions of a good Berlin summer tour.

With such an incredible array of unique spots at a variety of strand bars, sport spots, open-air theaters and endless under-the-sky clubs every week, it's always difficult to pick the right spots to rule them all.

And that's simply because every Berlin summer day is usually guaranteed great events, vibrant mood and stylishly debauched parties.

Berliners' faces you might not see out so much in the winter are everywhere in the summer; the typical Berlin hibernation is over and it's time to let it go. Go outside! Go for a round of Boule, visit the wonderful lake sides outside the city, take your BBQ right by the Spree, put the Burgers on the grill, chill and be prepared for a good smoke.

What started with vino tino and tostada de huevos de codorniz in Barcelona turned into a full-fledged love affair with the city of Barcelona.

Vienna surprised us even more with an artist's haven of a place, offspace, that we would have never expected to find in Austria's capital.

After few stressful weeks hovered over the computer, we sojourned to peaceful Copenhagen and recharged at one of the city's foliage-filled gardens.

Suddenly, we found ourselves with three more cities on our radar. Barcelona, Vienna and Copenhagen: countless of hours collecting, testing, and editing. We're taking a little weekend vacation now--we've earned it.
