Gummo is a succinct example of what you should do, if you don't have any money and want to make an unforgettable film. Solomon and Tummler are two teenage friends who kill time by sniffing glue and cycling around aimlessly in the remains of their tornado-ravaged town to shoot cats. Around them circulates a giddily bizarre gallery of characters, which deal a knock-out blow to every white trash cliché, and which unite in an uncompromising vision of the American Midwest as an anti-Bible sewer of ruin and cultural dissolution.
In his virtuous debut, Harmony Korine mixes fiction and documentary (and everything from 35mm to Polaroid and Super-8) to create a confrontative and surreal field trip into a world of violence and excess, but which also has its very own beauty and critical absurdity.
