Infecting the City is a festival of innovative, high-quality commissioned and collaborative works accessible to people from all walks of life. Performances are not staged in theatres, but in sites like public squares, fountains and on moving vehicles, becoming part of the living flux of the city.
This year talented creative artists from around the world will investigate the theme HUMAN RITE, presenting collaborative performance works, art installations, choreographed pieces and public interventions that grapple with the knots, scars and wounds of the Cape Town CBD.
Audiences are invited to attend a series of evocative works of ritual healing - a transformative journey that celebrates our fundamental right to be human.
"A film about a man who tried to make a film about me" is how Banksy
describes his first feature.
The British graffiti artist is renowned for producing
iconic street art and fiercely guarding his identity to avoid prosecution.
Little surprise then, that he was unwilling to be filmed by an eccentric
French shop owner named Thierry Guetta.
EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP traces Thierry's attempts to capture the
world of graffiti art in thrilling detail, following many of the best known vandals
at work in the streets. We trace Thierry's efforts to locate and befriend
Banksy only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner - with
spectacular results. An incendiary true story of low-level criminality, companionship
and incompetence. The story of how one man set out to film
the un-filmable. And failed.
The London newspaper 'The Times' once called Banksy "the true people's
painter". His black-and-white images of kissing policemen and rioters
throwing flowers are now popular icons. Banksy's work can be seen on
walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the Palestinian West Bank. His
graffiti combines wry humour with political comment - both of which can
certainly to be expected from his cinematic debut, which he has dubbed
"the world's first street art disaster movie".
Banksy began his career as a graffiti
artist in Bristol where he was a member
of Bristol's DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ)
from 1992-94. He works free-hand
and with stencils, latterly opting for
the exclusive use of stencils. His committed
works can be seen on streets all
over the world as well as in museums
(MoMA, Tate Modern). He has also created
album covers (for 'Blur' among
others) and has published his work in
books, such as the recent publication
"Wall and Piece".

A world record holder in inventions, 80 year old Dr. Nakamats is a Japanese inventor who patented the first disk, the brain stimulant tea, the water-powered bicycle taxi and an engine that runs on lysfotoner. His unstoppable energy to transform new ideas into physical form holds him in high regard amongst peers and family.
But how much do we really know about this mysterious mastermind from Tokyo? Following the film, director Kaspar Astrup will be present for discussion and queries.

In preparation for the festival, transmediale and the CTM (club transmediale) invited competition submissions for both awards. Invited were artistic positions, which in their formal language, approach, and practice, question and enrich our relationship to our itechnologically-driven society. From the approximately 1.500 submissions from 75 countries, the international jury selected nine nominated entries, which are being presented at the transmediale.10.
This year's winners of the transmediale and Vilém Flusser Theory Award have been announced. The awards were presented on the evening of February 6 by Barbara Kisseler, head of the Berlin Senate Chancellery, and the members of both juries.
The first-prize winner of the transmediale Award 2010 is the Canadian artist Michelle Teran, who lives in Berlin, with her work Buscando al Sr. Goodbar. Teran receives a cash award of 6.000 euros.
In her works Michelle Teran (Canada) explores the interplay between social and media networkswithin urban environments. Her project Buscando al Sr. Goodbar (2009) is a threefold tour through the Spanish town Murcia simultaneously taking place by bus as well as on Google Earth and YouTube. The bus can be followed virtually on Google Earth while YouTube videos are screened on the bus itself. By entering the spaces where videos were produced, an intimate encounter occurrs between video makers and audience. The project can be easily repeated at other locations such as Berlin as well, in the course of the transmediale.10.
The online work Bicycle Built For Two Thousand (2009) by the American artists Aaron Koblin andDaniel Massey is comprised of over 2,000 voice recordings collected via Amazon's Mechanical Turkweb service. Workers were asked to listen to a short sound clip, then record themselves imitating what they heard. The result was a reconstructed version of the song Daisy Bell - the first song to implement musical speech synthesis in 1962 - as rendered by a distributed system of human voices.
The Vilém Flusser Theory Award, worth 2.000 euros, is awarded to Warren Neidich for his research project Neuropower. Warren Neidich is from the USA and lives in Berlin.
The project Neuropower is a manipulation in the literal sense of the word. Departing from recent insights of brain research, the trained biologist Neidich searches for strategies to manipulate the process of ongoing cerebral reconstruction. Through artistic means - as for instance the performa-tive gesture - Warren Neidich attempts to re-conquer those cognitive realms which are normally subject-ed to the effects and mechanisms of the mass media in a globalised world defined by neoliberalism. Byjoining scientific and aesthetic knowledge elegantly, Neidich's work commences right there where reality is first of all constructed: in the neuronal networks of the brain.

Driven by the desire to show the passage of time through images that appear alive and moving, Myers' work recalls the process of the human eye, where images are destructed and transformed. Rather than capturing a single frozen moment, Myers scopes out his subject in minute detail, collecting numerous pictures which is later combined into the large-scale panoramas.
Employing the combination of digital photography and computer technology, Myers pursues and pushes the limits of traditional collage with the implementation of modern techniques.
If there is initial irritation when viewing the works, it very soon gives way to the urgent desire to dive deeper into the matter.

The graffiti ''Forget Your Past'' above the entrance of the monument to the Bulgarian Communist Party demonstrates the fate of the communist era monuments in Bulgaria. Situated in towns across the country, and once a symbol of pride, today most of them are neglected and ransacked. No matter if devoted to the Soviet Army, or the struggle against the Ottoman rule, they all share one and the same fate - to be a silent symbol of the forgotten past.
Many of the communist era monuments have been dismantled after the political changes in 1989. Nevertheless, there are still approximately 150 of them remain standing. Many of them are not recognized by the state and remain ownerless. Their exact number is unknown and it is difficult to find information about their authors and history.
The photographic series ''Forget Your Past'' reveals 14 of the most impressive communist era monuments in Bulgaria. The exhibition features 38 photographs displayed in diptychs, together with detailed information about the people who designed the structures and their histories. This project is realised within the frame of "Trace" - a platform that brings together artists and architects to consider the integration of communist monuments into the present day urban environment.

Socialism is the most extensive social experiment in the history of humankind that is
based on an initially utopian, then scientific, notion of the future: Communism. It is from this realm
that one of the few Science Fiction works emerged which really deserves the attribute 'science':
the Polish writer Stanislaw Lem spent his entire life developing a vision of the future that would
incorporate technological, social and psychological criteria. Fittingly, the first Science Fiction film
coming out of the GDR as a German-Polish co-production - Der Schweigende Stern - is based
on one of his early works. The fascinating imagery in Total Vision (the East German wide screen
equivalent of the American Cinemascope) reveals how a global visual canon of utopian ideas was
begun to be created in the 1950s; and further developed throughout the following decades until
eventually coming more or less to a standstill for lack of new utopias.

Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret,
their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.

The best way to predict the future, is to invent it!
Alan Key 1971.
One of the potentials of the new media technologies is to change the ways in which knowledge
is produced and communicated. The indetermination of how media are being used upon their
introduction is a "utopian and political factor" (Mercedes Bunz).
The current technological, cultural and social quality of what we refer to as the Internet, demands
that we rethink the most fundamental elements of our cultural identity, namely human communication,
interaction and interrelation. We live in a time in which diverse cultures can virtually at any
time enter into mutual exchange, dialogue or cooperation, something not possible without the
present digital technologies.
Having arrived in the technological future we are facing the responsibility
to redefine its social and cultural application.
Which ideologies and notions of the future will emerge from the introduction, application, rearrangement
and expansion of the Internet as "twin phenomenon of technology and society" (Dirk
Baecker)?

Each great brand needs its own culture for identity formation. Do cultural projects analogously
have to become a brand too in order to attract a larger audience?
Whilst traditional enterprises conjure up their corporate identity, the creative sector proudly
points to its heterogeneity. Cultural producers however must find a language with which they can
reach the public and be economically successful. How much corporate identity does a cultural
enterprise need - and how does one communicate this identity?

Some might call Henrik Vibskov a jack-of-all-trades, and it is true that Vibskov shows his innovative fashion designs in Paris, exhibits his artwork at established institutions such as PS1, MoMA, the Palais de Tokio and MU, and makes musical collaborations with the likes of Anders Trentemøller and Mikael Simpson. However for Vibskov, these seemingly different creative realms are not separate - it is intrinsic to his philosophy that they blend together, resulting in an all-inclusive Henrik Vibskov experience.
Vibskov consciously chooses not to isolate his interests. A modern incarnation of German composer Richard Wagner's mid-19th century concept of 'Gesamtkunstwerk' or 'universal artwork' - an idea that was central even to the Bauhaus movement - is carried on by Vibskov, dissolving the constraints of varying disciplines and allowing a unique art form to emerge.
In Henrik Vibskov: Graphic Works, Vibskov presents a selection of his two-dimensional pieces, exhibited alongside installation and knit-works. With colorful and organic shapes that seem like strange, animated beings, Vibskov's minimalistic "form-language" and "anarchistic lines" offer a glimpse at his own imagined universe. His experience with design, textile and pattern certainly shines through, resulting in a collection of works that, in keeping with his philosophy, intertwines a diverse selection of creative fields.
Henrik Vibskov graduated in 2001 from the prestigious Central St Martin's

Etienne de Crécy is, of course, best known for his super-size rubik's-cube-on-acid light shows. His work is firmly shaped in the classic French mould of smooth techno based around some seriously greasy bass-lines and elevating 4/4 beats. It comes as no surprise that he even went to the very same college as Air and Alex Gopher, with whom he later went on to create the 'Solid' label.
His album 'Super Discount' (1996) is even touted as many as being the first of the so-called 'French Touch' scene that went on to sprout artists including Daft Punk and Cassius.
Tonight he plays out a DJ set at the recently re-opened La Machine.
